Red, White, and BOOM – Stay Safe this 4th of July

The 4th of July is one of the best nights of the year in Southern California, but it's also one of the busiest nights for fire departments. A little bit of prep keeps the celebration exactly that: a celebration.

Before guests arrive, do a quick lap of your property. Clear dry leaves and debris away from the house, deck, and any structure within a few feet of where fireworks or a grill will be used. Keep a hose or fire extinguisher within reach, not in the garage behind three other things.

If your home has a wood shake or shingle roof, or you back up to open space, treat that as a real risk factor this time of year rather than a someday-maybe. Embers travel farther than people expect, especially with any wind.

Sparklers deserve respect too. They burn at temperatures hot enough to melt some metals, and they're the leading cause of holiday burn injuries in kids. A bucket of water nearby for used sparklers is a simple habit worth keeping. Have a safe, boom-filled 4th.
